Large, bold, golden-green glossy leaves appear in spring and are followed by large spikes of persistent pink and white hooded flowers.
 ACHILLEA
 
Yarrow or milfoil. A large family of easily grown garden perennials, particularly suitable for cutting and for drying. Plants range in colour from pure white through cream, lemon, gold, straw, terracotta, cerise, to scarlet. Most have tight heads or clusters of tiny flowers making broad flat heads most of which change colour as they age giving a multicoloured effect. Foliage is usually from grey to bright green and finely cut feathery leaves. All except some of the small alpine species are easily grown in an open sunny spot. Excellent plants for flower arranging.

Monkshood or aconite. A large plant family of 300+ species only a few of which are in general cultivation. The garden forms range from 50cm up to 200cm and all have clustered pyramidal heads of distinctive hooded flowers usually blue or violet-blue but also white and bi-coloured. All make good garden plants with bold leaves usually of dark glossy green. Plants respond to good feeding with compost, manure or leaf mould. The roots if eaten are poisonous.

A genus which now includes cimicifuga and consists of medium to large perennial woodland plants grown for their attractive delicately cut green or purple divided foliage, round or bottlebrush fluffy flowers and in some forms very attractive white, red or black, glossy berries. All plants grow well in humusy retentive garden soil in woodland garden or open border. The berries are toxic if eaten.

 AGAPANTHUS
 
African lily. Ten or more plant species from South Africa which have been used to produce many outstanding garden hybrids. All have clumps of arching strap like leaves and rounded clusters of blue, purple or white bell-shaped flowers which are good for cutting. Evergreen forms are usually quite tender and resentful of poor drainage. The deciduous hybrids, loosely called the Headbourne Hybrids, are completely hardy and adaptable to most garden situations though the ideal is a well drained soil in full sun. All garden forms lean strongly toward the sun. All do well in large pots but form large roots systems - use a tapered or straight pot.

Cyclamen are far hardier and easier to grow than most gardeners assume. Years of selling dried dead tubers garden centres have given them a reputation of being difficult. Both C. coum and C. hederifolium are very hardy and easily grown in a lightly shaded well drained position. An annual dressing of leaf mould or compost is all that is required. Tubers do not divide but plants will set seed and if care is taken not to disturb the young seedlings large colonies can be built up in time. All plants are pot grown in 7cm. pots.
