The Nursery
Buckland Plants is a small nursery some 350' above sea level
in the beautiful and peaceful Galloway countryside. Our climate
is moist and quite cold as at this height we lose most of the
benefit of the Gulf Stream. However we can grow many of the
choicer woodland and Asiatic species well and these will feature
increasingly in subsequent catalogues.
As an area for holidaymakers Galloway remains a well-kept secret.
It is one of the most beautiful areas in Britain. It contains
several outstanding Gardens including Threave, Logan Botanic,
Castle Kennedy, Glenwhan and many more. |

Plant Names
The speed at which names are changing is bewildering and many
of the changes seem senseless and wrong. However the motive,
to obtain an internationally agreed name for all plants, must
be commended and for the most part we have followed the changes
as recorded by the Plant Finder.
To any gardener having difficulty with the changes it may be
some solace to know that many well-known professional gardeners
are equally confused. We make every effort to ensure that our
plants are true to name and indicate if we are unsure. |

Hardiness
This is a very vexed subject as plants that are reliably hardy
in some areas may succumb in others. We can over-winter Lobelia
'Queen Victoria' without protection here but have great difficulty
with Nepeta sp. and Penstemon sp. which resent the combination
of damp and cold.
The important thing for all plants in areas of high rainfall
is good drainage. We have indicated those plants that are not
hardy, but it is very much a case of trial and error. If in
doubt over-winter a few cuttings under glass. It is a sad truth
that many of the most floriferous plants are the least hardy,
but they are so worth the effort. |

Finally
We would like to thank all our customers, both mail-order and
visitors to the nursery, especially for the many kind letters
and gifts of treasured garden plants.
The nursery is our living, and we can only do this if you, the
customer, are satisfied with the plants you receive and order
again.
We will make every effort to ensure that you receive good quality
plants at a fair price. If you do have any complaints or suggestions
please let us know.
We are always looking for new and interesting plants and would
be pleased to swap or buy anything unusual.
